A YOUTH who stole €13 worth of deli food and Lucozade was fined almost 20 times this in Athy District Court last week after earlier refusing a formal garda caution.

The court heard how the 17-year-old stole the items from Pettit’s SuperValu on Edmund Rice Square in the town on 24 July last.

“He could’ve got a formal caution,” said the prosecuting Sergeant Dave Hanrahan.

“I take it he refused?” opined Judge Desmond Zaidan, to which the sergeant nodded.

Sgt Hanrahan then revealed that the youth had three previous convictions and indicated that an updated probation report was submitted to the court.

“He is expected to go back to school on 3 November, but is labouring at the moment to pay back monies owed,” said the teen’s barrister.

“He has exhausted all options,” warned the judge as he fined him €250, and gave him three months to pay.

After discovering the defendant would be turning 18 in March the judge said: “Explain that if he continues behaving like this he will fall out of luck”.
