GARDAÍ from the Naas Roads Policing Unit were involved in a high-speed incident this week after observing a teenager operating an e-scooter at speeds of up to 50km/h in Newbridge.

While on patrol along the R445, officers clocked the young e-scooter driver and attempted to pull him over. When directed to stop, the 13-year-old rider refused to comply and proceeded to ride recklessly in an attempt to evade arrest.

The individual was eventually apprehended by Gardaí and will now be dealt with under the Juvenile Diversion Programme. The e-scooter involved has been seized.

Following the incident, Gardaí are urging parents to be aware of the legal requirements and safety concerns surrounding e-scooter use.

E-scooters should not be used by anyone under the age of 16. They must not exceed a maximum speed of 20 km/h and cannot be fitted with a saddle.

A spokesperson for the Roads Policing Unit reminded the public that e-scooters are not toys but motorised vehicles that require responsible use.

Misuse, particularly by minors, can result in serious injury and legal consequences.

Gardaí are appealing to all road users to act responsibly and work together to keep roads safe for everyone.
