Thousands gather for Big Switch in Athy

The Big Switch Parade through the town
A large festive crowd gathered Sunday evening in Athy for the annual Big Switch event.

Thousands came to see the switching on of the lights by cllr Aoife Breslin, Mayor of the Athy Municipal District and chair of Athy Town Promoters, as well as the arrival of Santa’s truck, supporting LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

The evening was lively with festive cheer from the crowd, and all who attended saw wonderful performances from Katie Roycroft, Carrie Haskins and DJ Gary, and a special performance by a fantastic group of young violinists from Athy, accompanied by the marvellous Noelle Robinson.

Athy Municipal District Promoters Officer Patricia Berry said: “Every man, woman, and child came out to see Santa. But of course, none of it would have been possible without the assistance from the gardaí, the civil defence, the Order of Malta and a powerful batch of volunteers.”

Athy can expect more festive events during the run-up to Christmas, including next week’s ‘Silent Santa’ event in Athy Library on Wednesday 4 December From 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Presented by Athy Town Promoters in conjunction with Athy Special Needs Access Group, this event is designed to suit children who prefer a crowd-free environment to visit Santa.
