Two people have died and two are critically injured in a multi-vehicle collision on the outskirts of Waterford city.

The collision occurred around midday on the Tramore Road in Waterford.

Emergency services are currently responding to the incident, and gardaí have put several traffic diversions in place close to the location as the road is currently closed.

Ambulance crews, fire services and gardaí were on the scene within minutes of the collision occurring.

It is understood that the two people who have been critically injured in the collision have been brought to University Hospital Waterford (UHW).

Drivers are being advised by gardai to avoid the Ballyksinsella Crossroads/ Pickardstown Cross areas where possible and to follow all diversion signage currently in place.

Gardaí are expected to provide updates as the situation develops, and they are advising motorists to plan alternative routes and allow additional travel time while the closure remains in effect.

In a statement gardaí said that both they and emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision at Pickardstown, Tramore, Co Waterford this afternoon.

“As this incident is ongoing, no further information at this time,” the statement added
