DEPUTY Martin Heydon has said fire and emergency services in south Kildare, specifically Monasterevin will be strengthened with new funding confirmed yesterday (7 April) of €3million for a new state of the art fire station in Monasterevin “is part of the largest ever investment in fire and emergency services”.
“I’m delighted to see this funding for emergency services in Monasterevin,” he said.
“The funding will be used for the construction of a new fire station in Monasterevin on a recently acquired site on the Moore Abbey grounds, and this investment ensures our fire services will have access to the modern tools, facilities and systems they need.
“We want our firefighters to have the best facilities possible to deal with serious issues right across our communities in Kildare.”
This funding is part of a total €328.5m under the Fire Services Capital Programme.
Of that €178.6 million will be invested in building or refurbishing 39 fire stations across the country and €86.9 million will be invested in the national fire fleet.
"It will help fire services deal with increasing severe weather events, wildland fires, and urban growth.
“Our fire and emergency services across Kildare are reliable and hardworking; it is vital that they have the facilities they need to best serve the community.
Concluding, Minister Heydon said: “This new fire station in Monasterevin, a project I have long championed along with cllr Kevin Duffy, is a major investment in the safety and resilience of our communities across South Kildare.”
The council also announced last week that it is in the final stages of acquiring Moore Abbey from the trustees of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary.
The religious community acquired Moore Abbey in the 1940s, and now wish for the property to be used for the benefit of the local community.
The Muiriosa Foundation will continue to maintain a presence on the site for a period of time following the acquisition.
Following completion of the acquisition, the council will engage in a process of consultation for the preparation of a masterplan for the future use of the estate including the sympathetic preservation and reuse of Moore Abbey House.
