Star jockeys help Rathangan lift county title
Donagh Meyler, left, and Danny Gilligan, scored a goal each to help Rathangan win the UPMC Kildare Junior 'A' Hurling Championship Final at Manguard Park after racing at Tramore earlier that day.
It was a busy day for jockeys Donagh Meyler and Danny Gilligan, who raced at Tramore before helping Rathangan lift the Junior 'A' Hurling Championship title at Manguard Park on Thursday evening.
Meyler, who won the Irish Grand National aboard Soldier In Milan in April, and Gilligan, a two-time Galway Plate winner, both featured on the racecard at Tramore earlier in the day.
Meyler's sole ride saw him finish second in the 2.10pm contest on the Ross O'Sullivan trained Dusky Night, while Gilligan was third in the same race before adding another third-place finish in the 4.30pm.
Following their racing commitments, the pair made the journey back to Kildare and both lined out for Rathangan in their championship final clash with Athy.
The trip proved worthwhile as both men found the back of the net, helping Rathangan power to a 3-5 to 0-7 victory and county final glory.
There will be little time for celebrations, however. Both riders are set to be back on the road on Friday morning as they return to the saddle at Downpatrick.
