A MAN who caused €2,500 of damage to a garda’s personal car that was parked at the rear of a garda station was given a six-month suspended prison sentence recently.
Terry Dunne from Canal House Way, Dublin Street, Monasterevin, Kildare pleaded guilty to criminal damage, the property of Garda Shane Monaghan, at Monasterevin Garda Station on 27 March 2023 at a recent sitting of Portlaoise District Court
He was also in court for failing to appear in court on 27 March 2023, 29 April 2023 and on 16 October this year.
Defending barrister Andrew Dunne asked that Mr Dunne be granted bail to allow his instructing solicitor to seek a medical report on his client.
Noting that the defendant had 29 previous convictions Judge Andrew Cody said: “In all that, there hasn’t been a probation report on him. There was €2,500 damage done to a garda’s private car and now you want me to fund a medical report (through free legal aid)."
Mr Dunne said that his client has medical issues.
Judge Cody convicted Mr Dunne of criminal damage and imposed a six-month sentence suspended for three years on condition that he seeks medical attention within three days of his release, resides at his home address and stays away from Monasterevin Garda Station.
He was also convicted on two counts of failing to appear in court, sentenced to three months on each, which were suspended for three years.
The other charge of failing to attend in court was taken into consideration.
Judge Cody fixed recognisance in the event Mr Dunne wanted to appeal against his decisions.
