Tributes pour in after shock passing of former Kildare GAA chairman

Former Naas and Kildare GAA Chairman John McMahon has sadly passed away

Tributes have poured in following the shock death of former Naas and Kildare GAA chairman John McMahon.

After a spell as vice-chairman of the county board, Mr. McMahon was elected Chairman in March 2011 and served until 2014. He also had two spells as chairman of his own club and was the club’s vice-chairman at the time of his untimely and terribly sad passing.

Naas GAA Club released a statement on their social media pages.

"It is with utter shock and heartbreak that we share the news of the passing of our beloved club member and Vice-Chairperson John McMahon.

“John served as chairman of Naas GAA on two occasions, being prominent with the relocation from Fr Brennan Park to our current premises. He also served as chairman of Kildare GAA, a role he filled with huge honour and pride, and in the latter years was a familiar face in St Conleth’s & Hawkfield stewarding at games of all codes.

"He filled a multitude of other roles in the club and will be remembered so fondly by every member, young & old.

"John was the best of Naas GAA. A true Club man & a gentleman who supported all codes and initiatives, always putting himself forward when work needed to be done . He was kind , fair and we will miss him so dearly.

"We send our deepest condolences to his family and many great friends both in the club and across the county.

Funeral details to follow.”

A number of people from the Naas club and the wider Kildare GAA community commented on the post to pass on their condolences to Mr. McMahon’s family and the Naas club at such a sad time.

Kildare GAA also released a statement:

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of John McMahon, former Chairperson of Kildare GAA. John was a true gentleman and a devoted GAA volunteer, serving both club and county with dedication. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with the McMahon family during this difficult time, as well as with Naas GAA Club.”

A minute’s silence was held in honour of Mr. McMahon before Sunday’s Leinster Senior Club Hurling Championship game at Cedral St Conleth’s Park between Naas and St Martin’s.
