THIS year’s Big Barrow Splash has been described as an absolutely brilliant day for Athy and surrounding areas. That’s according to Athy Dragon Boat Club, which took to social media after the upbeat affair to thank the many people who came out to support their fundraising day.
“It was a great day for community spirit. There's too many to thank, so thanks to everyone that was involved from spectators to teams that put in a hard fought day on the River Barrow, and especially the members of ADBC and Hazel and her team for putting on the pony rides… and of course our very own community garda Sean O’Mahony,” the club enthused.

They also thanked Kildare Co Council, Kildare Civil Defence, the Order of Malta, Athy Town Promoters, the Athy Tidy Towns team, and all the sponsors.

The action-packed event, always a highlight of Athy’s annual calendar, was held on Sunday 4 August on the Barrow at the Courthouse in the town. The racing course was on the river over a distance of around 200 metres.
There were crews competing from the likes of Athy Sing and Sign, Castlemitchell GAA, Athy Triathlon Club and much more!

A great crowd lined the banks of the Barrow to take in the action and enjoy lots of activities for all the family. Senator Mark Wall, a Castlemitchell man, was among those who came along to support the event.
“Great to see so many clubs and groups taking part,” he said. “Well done to all who organised a fantastic day on the Barrow.”
Patricia Berry from Athy Town Promoters described it as a fantastic day on Athy's waterways. “A huge well done to the club and all the amazing volunteers for making it another outstanding event for the bank holiday weekend in Athy,” she said.
An Garda Síochána Kildare congratulated Athy Dragon Boat Club "and all other concerned parties for an excellent event."
