Kidare show enjoying national run at The Olympia Theatre

A PAIR of Naas natives are taking their original show onto a national stage when their show gets a run in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin at the end of the month.
Originally written by Carol Gleeson and Helen Spring, tells the story of the showband era in the mid-60s, and has its current run on Dame Street until 31 August, including matinees.
“This tale offers a snapshot in time when Ireland was finally starting to find its’ voice and when showband music was the revolutionary language of the people,” explained Helen.
“We opened in Naas in November 2018, and toured in Carlow and The Civic in Tallaght, then Covid stopped the whole progress,” she said.
“We went back to the civic last year, and from there we were offered the run in the Olympia."
The show is set in Donegal, in the golden era of music, and follows Tommy O’Neill who finds himself at the helm of an up-and-coming showband.
As his star rises, he struggles both professionally and personally against the restrictive societal backdrop of 1960’s Ireland.
A tale of both joy and heartache, get ready to join Tommy on his rollercoaster journey and witness the music, magic and the glory of the past through the knockout songs of the sixties and revel in a host of hilarious and memorable characters.
Showcasing a live seven-piece band and boasting an impressive 30-plus cast, this theatrical spectacle is steeped in nostalgia which will, for some, bring back memories of their dancing days whilst reigniting the wonder of those live dancehall bands.
Musical numbers include hits such as , , , and among many more.
Featured in the front-line cast are the writers Carol Gleeson and Helen Spring in the roles of Mary McDaid and Sarah Harte.
“We have quite a big background in drama since we were kids, and performed together and we have written and performed together for years,” said Helen.
“This is the first thing we’ve written for the stage,” she said.
