Kildare poet showcases range of themes in latest work

ACCLAIMED Kildare poet Desmond Egan launched his latest work last week at Newbridge Silverware.
was officially launched by the film actor, Barry McGovern, a world-famous interpreter of Samuel Beckett.
Born in Athlone, Co Westmeath, Mr Egan has been a pivotal figure in the Irish literary scene, publishing 24 collections of poetry and revered translations of Sophocles'
and Euripides' .His poetry, resonating beyond Irish shores, has been translated into more than 25 languages including Swedish, French, German, Chinese, and Russian, among others. Mr Egan's profound narratives and his dedication to cultural enrichment have solidified his status both nationally and internationally and he is regarded as the ‘most translated contemporary Irish poet’.

The
collection features four interconnected sections that showcase a rich diversity of themes—from the tranquillity of nature to the dynamic shifts of contemporary society, to the transience and vulnerability of humans.Each piece reflects Mr Egan's understanding of the human condition, underpinned by his signature blend of humour and poignancy.
The collection’s cover, adorned with artwork by Mark Rothko, highlights a specific poem about Rothko that received admiration from the artist’s son, emphasising the deep interconnection between the visual and literary arts in Egan's work.

Mr Egan's career began after his academic pursuits at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, and University College Dublin.

He edited the arts magazine "Era," and since 1987, has served as the artistic director of the Gerard Manley Hopkins International Festival in Kildare.
