Kildare women A smash hit play written by Kildare natives will take to the stage this month.

For a limited run, the smash hit play with music ARE YA DANCIN’? – A Showband Story, written by Naas natives Carol Gleeson & Helen Spring, makes its’ highly anticipated national debut at 3Olympia Theatre this summer from Tuesday 27 August to Saturday 31 August (including matinees).

This beautiful Irish tale, which also stars Paul Mescal’s father Paul Snr, offers a snapshot in time when Ireland was finally starting to find its’ voice and when showband music was the revolutionary language of the people.

Set in Donegal, in the golden era of music, the story follows Tommy O’Neill who finds himself at the helm of an up-and-coming showband. As his star rises, he struggles both professionally and personally against the restrictive societal backdrop of 1960’s Ireland. A tale of both joy and heartache, get ready to join Tommy on his rollercoaster journey and witness the music, magic and the glory of the past through the knockout songs of the sixties and revel in a host of hilarious and memorable characters.

Showcasing a LIVE seven-piece band and boasting an impressive thirty-plus cast, this theatrical spectacle is steeped in nostalgia which will, for some, bring back memories of their dancing days whilst reigniting the wonder of those live dancehall bands. Musical numbers include hits such as “The Hucklebuck”, “Rock Around the Clock”, “If I Could Choose”, “I’m a Believer”, “Hit the Road Jack” and “From the Candystore” among many more.

Featured in the front-line cast are writers/producers Carol Gleeson and Helen Spring in the roles of Mary McDaid and Sarah Harte. Seán MacMathúna dazzles in the lead role as Tommy O’Neill, expertly supported by actors Kevin Reade as Jim Brennan and Bronwyn Andrews as Annie Brennan. Alongside an array of exceptional Irish talent from around the country, the production also sees the original Paul Mescal tread the boards as disgruntled bar owner Seamie McDaid in what is sure to be a memorable summer’s night out.
