Newbridge group rewrites ‘A Christmas Carol’ this month

The cast of NMT give it a few socks in rehearsal.

NOT satisfied with just an annual Easter musical, the Newbridge Musical Theatre (NMT) is going to “freshen up a festive favourite” with a production of ‘A Christmas Carol - With a Twist’ at the end of this month.

The group are busy in rehearsals for their latest venture which takes Charles Dickens’ classic tale about Ebeneezer Scrooge to the Riverbank Arts Centre from Friday 28 November to Sunday 30 November.

This brand new adaptation, penned by local man Adam Trundle, takes the well-known tale and merges it with the music from another famous Dickensian adaptation: Lionel Bart’s perennial ‘Oliver!’. Songs featured include ‘Food, Glorious Food’, ‘Consider Yourself’, ‘Oom-Pah-Pah’, and ‘As Long As He Needs Me’.

“The idea to present a new take on this classic story is one that we have been considering for a few years now,” says writer and NMT treasurer Trundle.

“As a musical theatre group, the chance to perform these amazing songs in a different, yet familiar, context was too good to pass up!” “We have an enthusiastic, young production team as well as a talented cast - including an amazing children’s ensemble who have blown us all away during rehearsals!” continued NMT chairperson, Conor Kilduff.

“Audiences can expect great humour, rousing renditions of songs they know and love, as well as the heart-warming tale of redemption that is the essential story of Scrooge. This will be fun for all the family, and a great way to start the Christmas season,” he concluded.

Tickets are available from the Riverbank Arts Centre box office online at www.riverbank.ie, by phone at 045 448 327, or in-person. Early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.

The NMT is an amateur musical theatre group, whose members come from Newbridge and the surrounding areas.
