Work of young Athy creatives on display in town

The work of young creatives and local artist Inez Dooley, daughter of Gavin and Karen, is on display until Friday 7 August in the Art House, Athy.

The exhibition by Inez Dooley is in collaboration with InSYNC youth project. Inez is a third-year student at NCAD in Dublin. The exhibition is entitled Heron-Tage Town which Inez explained. 

“Part of my second-year assessment was to put on an exhibition with a theme of my choice. I was instantly drawn to the idea of an exhibition based on my home town of Athy. An exhibition based on the rich heritage, quirkiness and beauty of the town and its people, something that often gets overlooked.” 

As a future educator, Inez decided to create a workshop as part of the project, which was aimed at bringing awareness to a younger generation in the town, collaborating with the InSYNC Youth Project served to shine a new and fresh light on the town and its environs, generating a dynamic which drove the project forward. 

A Heron-Tage Town aims to bring together a community to evoke nostalgia and appreciation for their surroundings in a humorous and universal way. 

This series of works highlights that sometimes, in a world full of injustice and sorrow, all you need is a reason to smile and appreciate what you have got, even if it is the old town you grew up in, the rustic buildings that have been around for generations and its quirky characters, such as the heron who is consistently found on the river Barrow that flows through the town. 

These ceramic works present the Heron as one of the locals in full embodiment of his Heron form. If you can, be sure and drop in to Art House on Leinster Street to see the exhibition.
