The proud community of Ardew Meadows in Athy came together recently to dedicate a memorial garden to family, friends and neighbours who have passed away.

The garden was set up in memory of residents of Ardew Meadows who have died in the estate since it opened around 15 years ago.
Dedicating the garden, chair of the resident’s committee Jimmy Dunphy said: “The garden can’t bring them back, but it can ensure that they will never be forgotten in this estate that shapes and enriches each of our lives.” The garden was brought to fruition by the committee and residents over a space of five years with a plaque, bench and plantings put in place. The late Sr Delores would have been the instigator on the project and would have put in trojan efforts.

It is hoped the garden becomes not only a place of remembrance but of “reflection and renewal”.
The current residents’ committee is made up of Jimmy, Sr Concepta, Carla Kenny, Lorraine Hyland and Magda Mielmann.
The committee thanked the architect of the garden, Simon Wallace of Kildare County Council for his support.
Organisers thanked all who had supported the garden and to Fr Francis McCarthy for blessing the garden.

Concluding the dedication, Jimmy said: “The family members, friends and residents here today, bring their memories of those we honour in this garden. We were involved in their lives. We helped them grow, and they in turn left their marks on us.

“We remain intertwined for all time, and this lovely garden ensures that this is something we shall never forget. May we all strive to keep this area a quiet and reflective place for all.”
