KILDARE Traveller Action have recently opened a new office space in Athy to connect more with Athy’s traveller community.

The new centre is in the Athy Parish Centre on Mount Hawkins Road and will be running a number of programmes and outreach efforts for the local community.

The centre currently runs a women’s group and offers the office as a meeting space for locals to connect with people from the Kildare Traveller Action group to discuss issues regarding accommodation, education and discrimination. An after-school programme will also be run from the centre.

Petra Daly, coordinator with Kildare Traveller Action said: “We have quite a high traveller population in Athy and there was a need to have a presence there with the work we do with the community. We want the community to be able to engage with the issues and be able to access the workers in our organization.

“So, if a traveller in Athy is having problems with accommodation or needs help or support around education or any issues that they are having we can have staff available to meet them in Athy and they wouldn’t have to travel a great distance to meet somebody. That actually, the service is provided there.” For more information, check out kildaretravelleraction.ie.
