Dylan Clarke broke Kildare and District Underage League hearts with a stunning injury-time winner as the North East Region edged a dramatic Kennedy Cup quarter-final in the dying moments.

It looked for long spells as though Kildare had done enough to bring the tie to penalties, with goalkeeper Paul Colbert producing a series of outstanding saves to keep his side in contention. However, Clarke had the final say, striking an unstoppable effort into the top corner to send NERL through and leave Kildare devastated.

The game was tightly contested in the opening half, with few clear-cut chances. Clarke came closest to breaking the deadlock on 26 minutes, attempting an acrobatic overhead kick that flashed just over the crossbar, offering a glimpse of the quality he would later deliver when it mattered most.

NERL raised their intensity after the break and took the lead three minutes into the second half. Fionn Harte latched onto a well-weighted through ball on the right and finished superbly past Colbert, putting Kildare firmly on the back foot.

To their credit, David O’Connor’s side responded quickly. Just minutes later, Zach McIlroy released Finn Hickey down the left channel, and his dangerous cross caused panic in the NERL defence, with Jack Farrell inadvertently turning the ball into his own net for the equaliser on 47 minutes.

Kildare grew in belief following the goal, but they continued to rely heavily on Colbert’s brilliance at the other end. The keeper produced two excellent saves to deny both Harte and Miguel Hernandez as NERL pushed hard to regain the lead.

As normal time ticked away, extra-time appeared inevitable. But deep into injury time, NERL earned a corner on the left. Hernandez delivered a precise ball to the back post, where Clarke arrived to meet it perfectly, firing a powerful effort into the top far corner and sparking wild celebrations.

It was a cruel ending for Kildare, whose resilience had nearly earned them another chance from spot-kicks, but NERL’s persistence ultimately paid off.

Kildare must now regroup quickly ahead of their Kennedy Cup Plate clash with West Cork.
