KDFL Alan Conlon League Shield - Round 1

Corbans Celtic FC 4

Enfield Celtic FC (O35s) 0

Corbans Celtic FC began their Alan Conlon League Shield campaign in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 win over Enfield Celtic FC, though the scoreline doesn’t fully reflect a competitive encounter shaped by tough conditions and sharp finishing.

Enfield’s Over 35s started well despite a strong first-half wind, with the opening stages evenly contested and chances limited. Corbans broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when Aidy Thomas finished from close range after a Mark O’Rafferty assist. Enfield responded with two good efforts but couldn’t convert. Just after the water break, the same duo combined again, O’Rafferty setting up Thomas for his second to give Corbans a 2-0 halftime lead.

With the wind advantage, Enfield dominated possession after the break but were repeatedly denied by a solid Corbans defence of Alan Coady, Gary Coady, Liam O’Shea, and Dylan Coady, with goalkeeper Ronan Coady rarely tested.

Corbans punished gaps as Enfield pressed forward. Debutant Carlos Pedro made it 3-0 after a Travis O’Neill assist, before Thomas unselfishly set up O’Rafferty in the 79th minute to seal the win.

Thomas earned Man of the Match, while Enfield’s Johnathan Leddy and Joey Grehan impressed.

LUMSDEN LEAGUE CUP – ROUND 2

Clonmullion AFC 5

Prosperous United 0

Clonmullion produced a polished and ultimately commanding performance to overcome Prosperous United 5-0 at Michael O’Neill Park in Round 2 of the Lumsden League Cup. Played on a beautiful Saturday evening in ideal conditions, the home side had to work hard early on before their quality and persistence told over the 90 minutes.

The opening stages saw Clonmullion probing for openings against a well-organised Prosperous defence. After ten minutes, Emmet Donoghue registered the game’s first effort on target from distance following good interplay with Sean O’Connor, setting the tone for the home side’s attacking intent. That effort seemed to spark Clonmullion into life, as they began to increase the tempo and apply sustained pressure. Cody Mulhall was central to much of their good work, and he nearly created the opener when he broke through the low block and squared to Noel Kelly, whose left-footed strike crashed off the crossbar.

Clonmullion continued to push, and shortly after a Mulhall corner caused chaos in the box, Kelly again tested Mark Kilgallon, who produced a solid save. Prosperous remained disciplined at the back despite growing pressure, but they struggled to contain the pace and direct running of Lee Doyle down the right wing. In the 40th minute, Doyle beat his man and delivered a dangerous cross to Mulhall, only for Christopher Delaney to intervene with a crucial block.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before half-time. Joe Doran picked out Mulhall inside the area, and the forward was brought down for a penalty. Showing composure, Mulhall dusted himself off and converted from the spot to give his side a deserved lead. Clonmullion nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Nathan Robinson produced an exquisite chipped pass, but Mulhall’s volley drifted narrowly wide. However, the second goal did come in stoppage time when Chris Chanders released substitute Ross Cardiff down the left, and his driven cross was met by Doran, who finished confidently to send Clonmullion into the break 2-0 ahead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Clonmullion dominating possession and continuing to create chances. Early on, Jake Nicholl slipped a pass through to Robinson, who fired just over from distance, before Nelson Ude made a vital last-ditch tackle to deny Mulhall a second goal. Chanders also came close, heading just over from a Robinson delivery as the home side looked to put the game beyond reach.

Prosperous had limited opportunities but almost pulled a goal back on a rare attack when O’Connor slipped Sean Scully through on goal. Scully rounded goalkeeper Evan Grattan, but defender Mark Hughes tracked back superbly to clear the danger and preserve the clean sheet.

With around 30 minutes remaining, Clonmullion extended their lead. Robinson and Doran combined well to create another opening, though it was initially blocked before Keane Cully reacted quickest to bundle home after Kilgallon’s save from Chanders. The fourth goal soon followed, as Nicholl’s throw-in found Chanders, who showed great composure before firing a low strike from 25 yards into the net.

Clonmullion capped off a fine performance with a fifth late on, courtesy of an excellent flowing move involving Doyle, Chanders, and Mulhall, with the latter finishing emphatically. While the scoreline reflected a dominant display, Prosperous United deserve credit for their work rate and organisation throughout a demanding contest.

Coill Dubh AFC 1

Monasterevin AFC 0

At Cusack Park, Coill Dubh edged out Monasterevin 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter played under the lights on Friday night. Despite heavy rain earlier in the day, the pitch was in excellent condition, setting the stage for an entertaining clash.

Coill Dubh, fielding a youthful side that included nine U18 players, started brightly and created several early chances. However, Monasterevin goalkeeper Kian Ryan Monaghan was in outstanding form, making a series of impressive saves to deny Jason Devine and Jack O’Brien and keep his side in the game. At the other end, Coill Dubh’s defence, marshalled by John McLoughlin, Craig Lenehan, and the MacMahon brothers, dealt comfortably with the visitors’ attacking efforts.

The decisive moment came in the 25th minute when Lennon O’Shaughnessy made a brilliant run before delivering a pinpoint cross for Jake Smullen, who finished confidently to give Coill Dubh the lead. Monasterevin responded well and nearly equalised before halftime, but a strong defensive intervention denied Scott Lavin in a one-on-one situation.

The second half saw Coill Dubh control possession but struggle to add to their advantage. The contest shifted in the 75th minute when a Monasterevin substitute was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession. Reduced to ten men, the visitors continued to battle, with Monaghan producing a series of excellent saves. Matters worsened for Monasterevin as they finished the match with nine players, yet they showed admirable resilience to limit Coill Dubh to a single goal. In the end, Coill Dubh secured a deserved victory, with standout performances from John McLoughlin and Jason Devine, while Monaghan was named Man of the Match for his heroic display in goal.
