HOPES remain that the green light will be given towards a new secondary girls school for St Mary’s in Naas, after the school missed out recently when letters of intent were issued for major extension work at other schools.
Two other schools in Meath missed out along with St Mary’s. At the most recent meeting of Naas Municipal District, cllr Evie Sammon detailed she had heard anecdotally that St. Mary’s was two months behind the schools that received the green light. There are hopes that the Naas school will get good news soon but Cllr Sammon indicated that there was no clarity from the Department of Education.
At the same meeting, cathaoirleach of Naas Municipal District Seamie Moore had asked Kildare County Council if any update on the status of St. Mary’s had been received, and requested that the matter be raised at the next meeting with the department in the case that no update had been received.
A report issued by the council in response to cllr Moore stated that the planning department had not received a recent update from the department on the matter. It added that the planning department will raise the matter at the next meeting with the department of education in early 2026.
Out of a bundle of six schools that were hoping for such a letter, three got permission. These were Cross and Passion College in Kilcullen and Patrician Secondary School in Newbridge as well as a school in Meath.
The projects in Kilcullen and Newbridge are expected to deliver state-of-the-art facilities for 1,000 students and six dedicated special education needs classrooms. Minister Martin Heydon welcomed the news and praised those in the two schools who had worked towards the developments.
