County councillor and retired Defence Forces member Pat Balfe has announced, with regret, his decision to step away from the Social Democrats and continue to serve as an Independent representative.
He is the second councillor in Kildare to defect from the Social Democrats in this council cycle, following Cllr Bill Clear’s defection – also to the ranks of the independent – in September 2024.
“My loyalty to the people who placed their trust in me remains absolute. My commitment to addressing the issues facing our communities, housing, social infrastructure, local services and community wellbeing remains unchanged," said the Kildare-Newbridge representative.
Describing the decision as difficult and taken only after prolonged reflection, cllr Balfe expressed his appreciation to the Party.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the support I received during my time as a member. I also appreciate the engagement afforded to me at all levels of the party structure and leadership, and the time taken to discuss the matters I raised. This decision does not arise from any personal or organisational dispute.” Cllr Balfe confirmed that his decision rests primarily on his lived experience as a member of the Defence Forces.
Having served 35 years in the Defence Forces, including numerous overseas tours of duty, and coming from a family with 90 years of unbroken military service to the State, he said Defence issues are deeply personal.
“Service in uniform is not an abstract policy area for me; it is part of my life and my family’s history. Ireland’s almost 70 years of unbroken peacekeeping service is something we should all be proud of. I have seen first-hand the professionalism and courage of Irish soldiers in some of the most challenging environments in the world and the effect it has on families left behind.”
He said the issue for him relates to how defence matters are framed and communicated publicly, rather than disagreement with defence policy itself.
Cllr Balfe noted that the challenges currently facing the Defence Forces reflect long-term pressures.
“The condition our Defence Forces face today reflects years of underinvestment. It is important that we reflect on how we ensure our Military is properly supported, resourced and valued. Our personnel and their families deserve no less.”
Cllr Balfe concluded by stating that while he leaves the party with regret, he does so with clarity and continued dedication to public service as an Independent councillor.
