A MAN originally charged with possession of two guns when stopped on an eScooter on the towpath of the Royal Canal in Maynooth, was additionally charged last week under the new legislation governing the use of such vehicles.
Detective Garda Daniel Lyons told Naas District Court that he had charged Dylan Ivie (31) of The Walk, Moyglare, Maynooth with three new charges following his arrest that morning in Naas.
“He made no reply to any of the charges,” the garda affirmed, before getting into the meat of the earlier charges.
“On 6 June Dylan Ivie was stopped by Gardaí on an electrical bike on the canal wearing a black balaclava,” said Det Lyons.
“I remember this,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan.
“There were two firearms discovered – live firearms!”
“Members of the public had been ringing the guards about this behaviour over a number of days.
“There was himself, and a pillion passenger; he had the rucksack on the wrong way round, on his chest."
On the last occasion before the court, the judge learned how the passenger absconded on foot following the stop, and was not apprehended.
This week he learned that said passenger is still at large.
“These new charges are under the new scooter legislation,” explained the detective.
The judge then remanded Ivie on continuing bail until 9 July “for directions”.
“Would you have the book (of evidence) next week?” asked the judge.
“I’d doubt it,” said Det Lyons.
The case continues.
