A MAN who made off from a service station without paying for diesel, cans of red bull and doughnuts was ordered to engage with Athy Alternative Addiction Programme when he appeared before the district court in Portlaoise.
Luke Wall (22), Jones Bar Accommodation, Clane pleaded guilty to the theft of €90.50 worth of diesel, two cans of Red Bull and to a €9.80 packet of doughnuts from Portlaoise Plaza, Junction 17, Togher, Portlaoise on 13 February.
Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said the defendant had six previous convictions and that none of the items stolen were recovered.
Barrister Andrew Dunne asked Judge Susan Fay to consider adjourning the case to allow time for his client, who has been living in homeless accommodation for the past eight months, to gather compensation for the items he stole.
Judge Fay instructed Mr Wall to take part in the Athy Alternative Addiction Programme and remanded him on continuing bail to the 20 July sitting of the court to finalise the case.
