A MAN in his 60s appeared before Athy District Court for being highly intoxicated and abusive to his wife.

The alleged incident occurred on 18 March 2022, where the man was said to have been drunk and verbally and emotionally abusive to his wife at their home in Athy.

The man stood before Judge Desmond Zaidan, shortly before being joined by his wife.

The court was told he had 27 previous convictions, which are all road traffic offences, including drunk driving.

“Are you still together?” said Judge Zaidan to the couple.

“Yes,” said the woman.

“Have you forgiven him?” said the Judge.

“Yes,” she replied.

“His behaviour is out the door when he’s on alcohol, but even on alcohol it doesn’t affect him anymore.”

She added: “He has learned to behave, your honour.”

The court noticed an inconsistency with the man’s date of birth between court files, information from gardaí, and so Judge Zaidan asked the man for his correct date of birth.

There was some confusion even then when the man relayed the information, so Judge Zaidan turned to his wife who then set the record straight and gave the court his correct birth date.

“You celebrate three birthdays in one year,” he said. “You’re some man for one man.”

Judge Zaidan entered the man under a peace bond of €100, providing he keep the peace and not come to the attention of gardaí for a period of 12 months.

“If you misbehave, you will go to jail,” concluded Judge Zaidan.
