It was a special day for Kildare Town last Friday afternoon as they officially opened their new pedestrian entrance and brand-new front gates, along with a new side gate to allow access for all. It is a momentous occasion for the club, established in 1966, made possible by the incredible support of the local community.
The new entrance was down to the down to club looking to become more sustainable. The club applied for, and received, planning permission for the new entrance and this will allow their members to walk safely to the club, therefore reducing the carbon footprint. There are also plans for a wild flower garden at the club entrance thus enhancing biodiversity and contribute to climate resilience. This project is part of an ongoing initiative that is to inspire better ecological development of our club ground and commitment to promoting sport and wellbeing in our community. Also, looking ahead to 2025, the club is focused on upgrading the Astro lights to sustainable options and improving bathroom facilities to include access for all. Their biggest goal remains the Astro project, and we’re determined to achieve it through grants and the continued support of the local community.
Kildare Town members range in age from Academy up to the Over 35 Team and they also field a ladies team. The club's primary goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. They strive to break down barriers and ensure that all members, regardless of age, gender, or ability, can participate in soccer and enjoy it's benefits. They also aim to nurture the soccer skills and talents of our members. Whether they are beginners or seasoned players, the club provides coaching, training, and opportunities for personal growth. Exercise is essential for overall wellbeing, engaging in soccer, and club members not only improve their physical health but also boost their mental and emotional wellness. Community sports have been proven to provide the best opportunity for young people to feel motivated to physical activity.
On the field, the club announced the managers for their three men's teams for next season. Fergal Finn will take charge of the first team, Jamie Maher is the manager for the seconds and David Carthy will look after the third team.
On their social media pages, the club said: 'The best of luck to all three men who have been great players and club men for Kildare Town AFC and it's brilliant to have all three at our club.'
The appointment of Finn as first team manager is a particularly exciting one for the club. He has longstanding links to the club and was a player during their most successful era in the late 90s and early 00s and was part of the team that famously beat Usher Celtic in the Leinster Junior Cup Final in Dalymount Park in 1998. That team was managed by his father Jim, and now Fergal will follow his footsteps by sitting into the hot seat at Rathbride Road.
