A MOTHER OF TWO whose partner was murdered and whose behaviour subsequently “spiralled” pleaded guilty to stealing over €2,530 worth of goods from three Carlow shops when she appeared before the local district court last week.
Deanna Gill (26), with an address at Marina Court, Athy, pleaded guilty to seven counts of theft over a six-month period last year, including from Mr Price on Kennedy Avenue, Carlow on 26 September 2024, 10 December 2024 and 5 December 2024; from Homesavers, Tullow Street, Carlow on 9 December 2024, 20 November 2024 and on 17 November 2024; and from O’Brien’s off-licence, Potato Market, Carlow on 28 June 2024.
A recent sitting of Carlow District Court heard that Ms Gill, who is in custody on the theft matters, stole €1,922 worth of goods from Homesavers alone on the 17 November date.
Barrister Eamonn O’Moore told the court that Ms Gill’s partner had been murdered and that she subsequently “spiralled into depression and addiction” and that she was homeless at the time of the thefts. He continued that she had been adopted from Belarus at the age of two and was raised in Rathangan.
Mr O’Moore continued that Ms Gill was in prison over the Christmas period and that being away from her two children was “an eye-opening experience”. He also said that she wanted to repay the shops she stole from.
Judge Geraldine Carthy said that she had to consider if a community service order was appropriate to the scale of Ms Gill’s offences and found that it was not appropriate.
She then convicted and sentenced Ms Gill to ten months’ imprisonment, which she backdated to the time that she went into custody.
