Man in court for refusing to pay taxi for Athy from airport

A MAN who took a taxi from Dublin to Athy then refused to pay the driver was given the benefit of the Probation Act in court after he handed over the €200 fare for the driver.
Athy District Court heard how the 27-year-old man hailed a taxi on Aston Quay in Dublin late on the evening of 15 August, and gave the driver his Athy address.
However, on arrival home he left the taxi without paying.
“When you were hit with the bill for €200 did that sober you up?” asked Judge Desmond Zaidan.
“€200 to the taximan,” ordered the judge.
“It would’ve been cheaper to take a flight,” he noted. “€200 fare? Why?”
"I missed the last train,” the defendant replied.
Learning the defendant had no previous convictions, he said he would apply the Probation Act if the €200 was handed in before the end of court business that afternoon, and advised Sergeant Ruth Coleman: “Get a receipt from the driver."
