Motorist crashes into railway bridge near Athy

The badly damaged railway bridge at Rosetown on the outskirts of Athy
A Motorist had a lucky escape when his vehicle ploughed into a railway bridge on the outskirts of Athy shortly after midnight.
It is understood, the crash happened at the railway bridge at Rosetown on the Levitstown to Kilkea road between Athy and Carlow shortly after midnight. The bridge straddles the busy Waterford to Dublin railway line.
The vehicle, which was travelling from the Kilea direction, towards the busy Athy to Carlow road, crashed into the right-hand side of the bridge before bouncing across the road into the wall on the opposite side of the road.
Shortly after the crash, local gardaí arrested a man near the scene and brought him to Athy Garda Station for questioning. Emergency services were also called to the scene and made the bridge and road safe.
Personnel fromí Íaanrod Éireann are currently at the scene of the crash and surveying the damage caused to the 150-year-old stone bridge.
While significant damage was caused to the bridge, the road remains open to traffic and members of the public.
