Accidents occurring at dangerous Kildare bend

Nurney, Kildare

A LARGE number of incidents have occurred at a bend on the entrance to Nurney, which leaves residents concerned.

Small adjustments have been made to make the bend more visible. This was done by cutting down hedges around private properties. While this helped the problem significantly, the bend still poses major risks.

Cllr Brian Dooley brought this problem back into focus at the last MD meeting, asking that the council redesigns the bend to avoid further incidents in the interest of public safety.

While the bend was the topic of discussion, cllr Dooley saw driver behaviour as a leading cause of accidents in the location:

“A lot of it is down to driver behaviour. We still have a number of accidents happening there.”

“It’s only a matter of time before someone is unfortunately walking around the corner and is hit.”

Cllr Dooley called this bend an “area of focus,” and said:

“The people of Nurney would like to see some solution put forward.”

Cllr Veralouise Behan suggested additional measures, such as crash bollards and speed bumps, to further enhance safety at the bend, and said: "This problem isn't really going away. Maybe there are different creative solutions to explore."

Unfortunately, the council responded that they do not have the “funding or resources available to carry out a scheme of this nature at the present time.”
