Kildare County Council remains unable to provide a date for when the Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points in a car park in Athy will be back in operation.
At March’s meeting of Athy Municipal District, cllr Aoife Breslin sought an update on the matter of the charging points at Meeting Lane car park in the context of them being out of action since 2024.
A response issued by senior executive officer for transport, mobility and open spaces at Kildare County Council Mark McLoughlin outlined that the council is part of a regional group developing a strategy for EV charging infrastructure, with it being likely that commercial entities will deliver the EV charging points. The council would assist with the delivery of charging points at locations where there are “gaps in the network.” The report stated that “it is too early at this point to determine which scenario fits into the Athy situation bearing in mind other commercial providers in the town.” Cllr Breslin struck a tone of frustration at the meeting, noting that the delay in providing a date for the return of the charging points comes in the context of the energy crisis and at a time where is a focus on the way people commute.
