Buses gets lost in Athy due to lack of parking spot
Emily Square, Athy
BUS parking at the rear of Emily Square is “to be considered” as part of a review of Athy parking byelaws in the new year.
Athy councillor Brian Dooley has sought clarity on whether Kildare County Council intends to designate a bus parking area at the rear of Emily Square at a recent meeting of Athy Municipal District.
Cllr Dooley described instances where a bus driver got lost, as there is no real designated bus area in the town.
It is the position of the MD, that with huge advancements throughout the town that bring in more footfall, it is equally important to fit out the town with essentials such as bus parking.
In response, council officials said that while buses may continue to use the location for drop-off and collection, using the space for longer-term parking “may not be the most appropriate use.” Instead, they suggested that buses should park outside the town centre when not actively loading or unloading passengers.
The council added that the matter can be examined further as part of an upcoming review of parking bye-laws for Athy.
