Businesses invited to help clean up Athy roads
A PROPOSAL has been made to invite businesses to help clean up roads in Athy.
Cllr Brian Dooley brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District proposing that Kildare County Council, with the support of Kildare Local Enterprise Office and Kildare Chamber of Commerce, invite local businesses or industry to maintain roads coming into Athy. In return, participating companies would be allowed to advertise their involvement, demonstrating their corporate social responsibility.
Acting senior parks and landscaping officer Simon Wallace issued the council’s response, which said there were numerous aspects to cllr Dooley’s proposal that needed “further information and discussion”.
He asked which roads were being considered and what maintenance works were proposed. He also said that other ways of acknowledging participating companies might be needed as the signage suggested by cllr Dooley could detract from the town’s entrance.
Mr Wallace’s response also outlined that other matters would need to be looked into, such as health and safety requirements for the works, approval form council engineers and Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the staffing needed to operate the scheme.
Calling into the meeting virtually from the US, cllr Dooley suggested that the scheme be piloted with one company first before being rolled out to involve other businesses.
Cllr Dooley’s Fianna Fáil colleague Veralouise Behan expressed her support for the motion, saying that many businesses would want to be involved.
Cllr Aoife Breslin described the motion as “very apt”. She said that Athy Tidy Towns are currently doing their best but are low on numbers.
The Labour Party councillor called for a meeting of the various relevant stakeholders.
