THERE has been a call for the immediate and comprehensive implementation of the Curragh Plains Conservation Management Plan, amid growing concerns about protecting the area from “further damage.”

The motion brought forward by cllrs Chris Pender and Pat Balfe was backed by members, who agreed that the council should write to the Department of Defence and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage seeking clarity on timelines, dedicated funding, and enforcement measures to safeguard the Curragh Plains from further damage.

The Conservation Management Plan was submitted to Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin, late last year. In December 2024, the Tánaiste approved its publication.

However, councillors stressed that significant steps remain before the plan can be fully realised, including legislative amendments, securing funding, allocating resources, and determining the structure of the body that will oversee the Curragh’s long-term management.

The government’s 2025 Programme for Government makes specific reference to the issue, stating:

“This government will implement a Conservation Plan for the Curragh, establishing a management plan to ensure its preservation, with careful consideration of which agency is best suited to manage this historic landscape.” Cllr Pender said: “This should be of utmost priority. We don’t want to see something like this fall by the wayside.”
