THE YOUNG Clane woman has received nationwide attention this week for her hunger strike in solidarity with Palestine, has stopped due to health concerns.

Sophie Ní Choimín began the hunger strike on May 21 and pledged not to eat again until the Irish government passes the Occupied Territories Bill.

Sophie was horrified by the Israeli blockade opposed in March, which stopped supplies into Gaza, resulting in the mass starvation of thousands of people.

By day six of the hunger strike, Sophie reported dizziness, body aches, severe hunger pangs and a cough.

With her family supporting her and doctor’s monitoring the situation, she wanted to keep going for as long as her body would allow.

However, yesterday, on day 7 of the hunger strike, she took to social media to explain that she was to pause her hunger strike due to worries over her health.

She wrote on social media: “My commitment to my family was that I would not put them through any more hurt than was completely necessary. I owe them a great debt for their trust in me."

It was reported that Sophie intends to start the hunger strike again when she is feeling stronger.
