A DRIVER has been arrested for drink driving and had their vehicle impounded following a Roads Policing operation in Kildare.

The arrest was made after members of the Naas Roads Policing Unit carried out a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoint at Eadestown.

Gardaí said the driver failed a roadside breath test before being taken to a Garda station for further evidential testing, which confirmed they were over the legal alcohol limit.

The driver now faces a €200 fixed charge notice and a three-month driving disqualification for drink driving.

The motorist is also due to appear before the courts for allegedly driving without insurance. If convicted, they could face a fine of up to €5,000 and a driving ban of up to two years.

The vehicle involved was also impounded by Gardaí.

In an online statement following the operation, Gardaí warned that drink driving “destroys lives, families and communities” and said driving uninsured and under the influence showed “a complete disregard for the safety of every other road user”.

The Roads Policing Unit said they will continue targeting dangerous driving offences across the county and warned road users that anyone caught drink driving can expect to be “stopped, arrested and prosecuted”.
