A DRIVER transporting 40 passengers failed to notice Gardaí pursuing him with blue lights and sirens for over 5km because he was distracted by a phone call.
The incident occurred recently when Naas Gardaí attempted to stop the vehicle for mobile phone use while driving, only to realise the driver was seemingly unaware of their presence behind.
Gardaí said in a statement on social media that the fact there were tens of passengers was even “more concerning.” “Professional drivers have a duty to uphold the highest standards of road safety,” they said.
While no accident occurred, Gardaí highlighted the significant risk posed by distractions at the wheel.
“Distractions—especially mobile phone use—can have devastating consequences,” the statement added.
The driver was issued a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN) and 3 penalty points.
Gardaí are urging all drivers to stay alert and focused behind the wheel, particularly those in charge of public or commercial vehicles.
“Let this be a reminder: stay focused, stay alert, and never use your phone while driving,” the statement concluded.
