Dreams of a brief return to last week's fabulous weather for the Easter weekend have been quashed by Met Éireann.

Good Friday will see dull, wet, and breezy conditions with widespread rain, heavy and persistent at times.

Several counties are under a status yellow rain warning today and tomorrow, and Wicklow is under an orange rain warning until 11am on Saturday morning.

Cork, Kerry, Galway, Mayo, and Clare will be under the yellow warning until 9pm on Friday night, while Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Waterford have the warning until 6am Saturday morning.

Nationwide, Met Éireann warns of localised flooding due to excess surface water, and there may be mist and coastal fog also.

Highest temperatures will range from 8 to 12 degrees.

The wet and murky conditions will continue overnight and into Saturday morning, with further outbreaks of rain, heavy, and persistent in places, especially across eastern areas with ongoing potential for localised flooding.

Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with coolest conditions in northwest areas.

Saturday

There will be another wet start to the day on Saturday with a lot of excess surface water.

However, Met Éireann forecasts drier conditions to very gradually develop.

Clouds and rain will linger in places with some mist and hill fog too.

Highest temperatures will range from 8 to 13 degrees, with light to moderate easterly breezes.

Sunday

Met Éireann said there is some uncertainty in the forecast for Easter Sunday, but current indications suggest outbreaks of light rain will clear eastwards in the morning followed by occasional sunny spells and some well scattered showers.

Cloudy conditions look to build from the west in the afternoon with rain following.

Highest temperatures will range from 11 to 15 degrees in a light to moderate southerly breeze.

Monday

Rain will clear from the northeast on Easter Monday morning and will be followed by sunny spells and showers.

Highest temperatures will range from 11 to 14 degrees in a light to moderate southwest wind.
