A further call has been made for an orbital bus route for Naas.

Cllr Evie Sammon brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Naas Municipal District proposing that Kildare County Council seek an update from the National Transport Authority (NTA) regarding the matter of “a town/orbital bus route for Naas.”

Acting senior engineer sustainable transport and traffic management Chris Galvin said the council would seek an update on the bus route from the NTA.

An orbital route would connect the outskirts of Naas without requiring passengers to travel into and out of the town centre.

Cllr Sammon spoke at the meeting to note the limited public transport options currently available on the outskirts of Naas. She first called for the orbital route several years ago.

The councillor cited the example of those who journey from the northern end of town towards Piper’s Hill, and pointed out the benefit of the mooted orbital route for those travelling to schools.

Cllr Bill Clear expressed his view that there should be a route which also serves the wider area around Naas including Sallins, Johnstown and Kill – with these areas combined with Naas having a large population of around 40,000 altogether.
