Heartbroken parents urge young drivers to slow down
Oisín Martin
THE parents of Oisín Martin, who died in a car accident last week, have urged young drivers to slow down. Oisín, who was in his 20s and from Tinnecarrig, Borris, Co Carlow was laid to rest at St Patrick’s Church in Ballymurphy on Sunday.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Fr Rory Nolan said: “I know that Breda and John Joe want me to stress to you today, especially to Oisín’s peers, that when you drive, please slow down. Being late is okay. No-one would wish the pain and loss that you feel today should visit another family.”
Oisín tragically died in a car crash at Ballytiglea on the R702 between Borris and Goresbridge early on the morning of 20 May.
At his funeral, he was remembered as a laid back and popular young man who was devoted to his GAA club, Mount Leinster Rangers. In a tribute to Oisín by the club, he was described as an ‘outstanding’ GAA player.
His three sisters each placed an item on the altar during the service: Emily placed a photograph of Oisín, Hannah placed one of his treasured caps, Fr Nolan noting that the only times he saw Oisín not wearing a hat or cap was when he served Mass, and Rachel placed a razor â during lockdown, Oisín discovered a talent for cutting hair. Another loved one, Maddy, placed a Mount Leinster Rangers jersey and Fr Nolan called the club a “second home” for Oisín.
At the end of the ceremony, Susan, speaking on behalf of the family, thanked the first responders who attended to Oisín at the scene of the accident, John Joyce Funeral Directors, as well as Fr O’Shea and Fr Nolan for the beautiful Mass and their guidance and support. Mount Leinster Rangers was also thanked for the prayer vigil the club organised on 21 May and its continued support, and there were also thanks for friends and neighbours for their support during this very sad time.
Susan finished by remembering Oisín as “a wonderful young man who brought so much joy to all of us. We each have our memories of him and we will remember him with fondness and with love. May he rest in peace.”
Oisín’s death notice on RIP.ie said that ‘Oisín is deeply missed his by loving parents Breda and John Joe, sisters Emily, Hannah and Rachel, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and extended family’.
