Historic Kildare bar finally gets green light for extension

Finlay's Pub in Monasterevin

A HISTORIC bar in Monasterevin took the second chance given to it by the planners earlier this year, and gained permission for an sizeable extension at Finlay’s Bar.

Function Room

The bar is now going to have a new 127sqm function room, a 102sqm beer garden with an extendable motorised roof, an extended keg store, additional toilets, as well as a fire protection upgrade and 50sqm extension of the first floor flat.

There will also be a new shopfront, but within the protected structures legislation, as well as more signage for the new second entrance round the side.

The parent company called Moderna Private Ltd first applied to Kildare County Council in March with their plans for improving the pub.

In May, a planner’s report was published where the council were “sympathetic” with the idea, but felt it needed a lot more information, considering the historic nature of this 270-year-old building.

Archaeological Assessment

Over the next few months the owners made a comprehensive submission of further information to planners, mainly to do with an updated Archaeological Heritage Impact Assessment (AHIA), a SuDS Plan (sustainable drainage), as well as signage, and a ramp.

Moderna Private had remedied issues to the satisfaction of planners.
