A PROPOSAL to add Feighcullen Church to the Derelict Sites Register has been brought before Kildare County Council.

At a recent municipal district meeting (MD), cllr Brian O’Loughlin submitted a motion calling on the council to formally place the church on the register, which is used to identify and address neglected or unused properties.

In response, the council confirmed that its Town Regeneration Team has already opened a Derelict Sites file in relation to the property.

Council officials said that initial investigations into the ownership of Feighcullen Church are currently underway and that statutory procedures under the Derelict Sites Act will now commence.

Cllr O’Loughlin told the MD about the historic building, which was erected in 1829. Some years back, the building had been partially renovated with replaced windows, but have since been broken, which the local representative called “an absolute disgrace”.

Cllr O’Loughlin said there is also an overgrowth of alder on the building which has contributed to damage to the roof.

Allen Historical Society have endeavoured to find the owner of the church, but have been unsuccessful in making contact.

However, if the investigation proves successful, the building’s inclusion on the Derelict Sites Register will allow the council to take further action aimed at preventing deterioration and encouraging restoration.
