OVER 3,000 social housing units have been delivered in the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District over the past five years, according to figures released by Kildare County Council — but a recent council meeting saw tensions rise over questions about who received the homes.

The information was provided in response to a question from cllr Tom McDonnell, who requested a breakdown of housing allocations in the district, including the involvement of Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs).

According to the Housing Department, a total of 935 social housing units were allocated directly by Kildare County Council between 2019 and 2024.

In addition, AHBs have delivered a total of 2,117 housing units in the municipal district from 2020 to 2024.

These homes were provided by several bodies including Cill Dara Housing Association, iCare, Co-Operative Housing, Clúid, Oaklee, Tuath, Clanmil, Circle, North and East Housing Association, and Cill Úirní Housing Association.

When asked if he needed clarification on the council’s response, cllr McDonnell, wanted to know “who actually gets those houses?”

A Housing Department representative explained that everyone on the housing list gets allocated housing in the municipal district.

“Can I get that list,” said McDonnell.

“Can I see who got those houses? Were they indigenous Irish people that got them?”

Cathaoirleach Peggy O’Dwyer intervened: “You’re bringing in a tone and I’m not allowing it. It’s inappropriate.”

“Transparency, that’s all I’m asking for,” said McDonnell.

The Housing Department representative explained that these figures had been previously circulated last September before the elected officials.

In disagreement, McDonnell stated that the figures were “old stock”.
