A LOCAL Kildare Gala shop has been chosen to receive the Gala Greener Grant, which helps to support retailers in their transition to sustainable technologies.
Worrell’s Gala in Kildangan, Kildare were chosen for the grant, which has supported the upgrade of a new refrigeration system for the store, helping to reduce energy usage and contribute to a greener future.
The new refrigeration system is projected to save the store 1,840 kWh of energy annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 2202 tonnes per year – which is the equivalent of over 146 trees needed to offset the same amount of CO2, showcasing the tangible benefits of adopting sustainable practices in convenience retail.
As part of Gala Retail’s nationwide commitment to sustainability, Gala Greener Grants offer financial support to Gala retailers seeking to reduce their energy usage by adopting sustainable technologies, such as waste heat recovery systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points. The initiative is part of a €500,000 sustainability fund, which will be distributed to Gala retailers across Ireland by 2030.
Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail, added: “Through the Gala Greener Grants scheme, we aim to support our retailers as they invest in the future and contribute to a greener, more sustainable Ireland. Worrell’s Gala is leading the way, and we are excited to see the positive impact that this will make to the store.”
Gala’s commitment to sustainability reflects the growing importance of environmental responsibility within the retail sector. By providing financial incentives and support, Gala Retail is encouraging its network of retailers to embrace innovative technologies that benefit both their businesses and their communities.
