SOME 17 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence during a week-long St Patrick’s Bank Holiday road safety campaign in the Kildare/Carlow division, Gardaí have confirmed.
One of the most serious incidents occurred in Celbridge, where a driver was stopped and arrested for drunk driving. Gardaí reported that the motorist was found to be nearly five times over the legal alcohol limit. The person has since been charged and is due to appear before the courts.
Authorities described the case as “a reckless decision that could have cost lives,” underscoring the potentially devastating consequences of driving while intoxicated.
Gardaí reiterated that there are no valid excuses for getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, warning against common justifications such as believing one is “fine to drive,” having “just a few drinks,” or travelling “only a short trip.”
As part of their appeal to the public, Gardaí urged drivers to plan ahead by arranging alternative transport, including lifts from sober drivers or taxis.
“Think before you drive,” a Garda spokesperson said. “Someone’s life could depend on it.”
