Kildare makes decision for presidential election on Monday

Áras Chill Dara, Naas, Kildare
KILDARE County Council will convene a special meeting on Monday, September 22 to consider a motion on a presidential nomination.
The meeting that is scheduled to take place at 2pm in the Council Chamber at Áras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas, follows a resolution passed at the Council’s monthly meeting on June 30, which agreed to set aside the date for the purpose of dealing with presidential nomination business.
This time around, only one proposed nomination comes from Kildare, which is a motion proposed by Newbridge cllr Tom McDonnell, and seconded by cllrs Noel Heavey and Brian O’Loughlin, that the Council nominate Maria Steen as a candidate in the forthcoming presidential election.
Mrs Steen, who has been called a “conservative campaigner,” has taken part in debates and campaigns against the 2015 referendum on marriage equality and has spoken against repealing the 8th amendment in 2018.
If approved, the motion would see Kildare County Council formally put forward Mrs Steen’s name for the 2025 presidential election. This will be a matter for members to decide.
