A MAN caught riding an e-scooter on a footpath in Newbridge – while also carrying a passenger – was brought before a sitting of Naas District Court last week.
Dinu Cozman (26), of Baywood Villa, Moorefield Road, Newbridge was charged with the offence but failed to show and was not legally represented when his case was called.
He was to face a single charge under Road Traffic (eScooter) Regulations 2024, contrary to Section 11 of the Road Act 1961.
Sergeant Mary Meade told the court how Mr Cozman was apprehended on the Main Street on Great Connell, Newbridge on 7 July 2024.
This was only two months after the legislation was introduced – on a footpath, with a passenger.
“A passenger?” enquired Judge Desmond Zaidan.
“For a fee?” the judge added.
“No idea,” said Garda Stephen Darby, the arresting officer.
“No helmets? Elbow pads? Knee pads?” the judge asked.
“Nothing,” said Garda Darby emphatically.
Noting the failed appearance, Judge Zaidan didn’t pause for a second before fining Mr Cozman €500 in his absence.
Mr Cozman has until 23 April to appeal this decision.
