The site of a former Peter McVerry Trust site on the main street in Sallins could be used for affordable housing.

This emerged at the most recent meeting of the Naas Municipal District, where cllr Carmel Kelly motioned that “that the council considers the former Peter McVerry site in Sallins for affordable housing.” Cllr Anne Breen supported the motion.

The council response, issued by an administrative officer on the housing capital team, stated that the local authority “is exploring all options for the development of this site including the viability of affordable housing.” It was further detailed that the possibility of KCC taking over the design team contract from the Peter McVerry Trust so that the same designers can continue to work on the project, with it being noted that the existing team have already completed “a significant amount of design work”.

Fianna Fáil councillor Kelly struck an urgent tone on the topic of housing, noting the problem of young adults who have grown up in Sallins and who want to continue living there but face a struggle in finding somewhere to live.

She expressed her view that Sallins should be considered on its own merit rather than in the context of its’ proximity to Naas, noting that it is now a small town rather than a village.

Cllr Kelly, who lives in Sallins, went on further to say what is needed in Sallins is “affordable starter homes for our children who have come of age”.
