KILDARE Town has notably low number of parking spaces relative to its population, significantly below that of comparable towns, according to a local public representative.

Cllr Suzanne Doyle brought the issue up at a meeting of Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District.

She sought an update on efforts to increase parking capacity, highlighting the imbalance between the town’s growth and its limited parking provision.

Cllr Doyle called the lack of parking a “problem”, arguing that for a “key destination town” in the county, it is unsuitable to be behind on parking.

She further asked the council for a comparative analysis of parking throughout the county, and particularly in the municipal district.

In response, the council confirmed that new parking bye-laws for Kildare town are expected to be brought forward for public consultation in the near future.

However, officials cautioned that options for expanding parking infrastructure remain constrained.

According to a report issued by senior executive officer for transport, mobility and open spaces, the availability of additional land for parking development is “extremely limited.”

Despite these challenges, the transport department has identified a number of potential new parking spaces.

These will be incorporated into the draft bye-laws and presented to the public as part of the consultation process.

The upcoming consultation is expected to play a key role in shaping how the town addresses its parking deficit, as stakeholders weigh in on proposed measures aimed at easing pressure in one of the area’s most persistent infrastructure concerns.
