A NAAS councillor has questioned Kildare County Council on why mobile homes and caravans were allowed to move into Kildare County Council’s Sallins/Osberstown aqueduct compound, despite previous commitments to secure the site from unauthorised use.
At the most recent meeting of the Naas Municipal District, cllr Seamie Moore asked officials to clarify the situation and respond to reports suggesting the site could be designated as a new halting site.
In response, the municipal district office confirmed that it will assist in securing the location once the Housing Department confirms the encampment has vacated. Officials stressed that the compound is a pumping station and that the Transportation Department has no plans for alternative uses.
Council documents also confirm that legal proceedings are underway. A court order was issued on 31 July 2025 directing the occupants to leave within 48 hours of service. The order was served on 7 August, but the site remains occupied.
Kildare County Council has instructed its legal representatives to prepare further documentation for attachment and committal proceedings. However, progress has been delayed due to the annual court recess in August and September, with the application set to proceed once courts resume in October.
The issue remains under active consideration by the Kildare Housing Department and the municipal district office.
