Motorist arrested in Kildare after driving 116kph in 60kph zone

A driver in Co Kildare has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving after being detected travelling at almost twice the speed limit on the R407 at Painstown in north Kildare.

The incident occurred during a Garda “Slow Down Day” operation on Wednesday, when Naas Roads Policing Unit clocked the motorist at 116km/h in a 60km/h zone. Gardaí described the behaviour as “not a minor lapse in judgement” but “dangerous driving” that put other road users at serious risk.

In a Facebook post, Kildare gardaí said that at such a speed “there is no room for reaction, no time to stop, no margin for error”, particularly on a regional road used by families, pedestrians and cyclists.

The driver was arrested at the scene, charged, and is due to appear before the courts.

Gardaí reiterated that speed limits “are not suggestions” and warned that enforcement will continue for those who ignore them.
