Motorist has a lucky escape after crashing into Kildare railway bridge

The badly damaged railway bridge at Rosetown between Athy and Carlow

A Motorist had a lucky escape when his vehicle ploughed into a railway bridge on the outskirts of Athy shortly after midnight.

The crash happened at the railway bridge at Rosetown on the Levitstown to Kilkea road between Athy and Carlow shortly after midnight. The bridge straddles the busy Waterford to Dublin railway line.

The vehicle, which was travelling in the direction of the busy Athy to Carlow road, crashed into the right-hand side of the bridge before bouncing across the road into the wall on the opposite side of the road.

Gardaí arrested a man near the scene and brought him to Athy Garda Station for questioning. Emergency services were called to the scene and made the bridge safe.

Staff from Íarnrod Éieeann are currently at the scene and surveying the damage caused to the 150-year-old bridge.

While significant damage was caused to the bridge, normal rail services are in place, and the road remains open to traffic and members of the public.
